While women couldn’t (and still can’t!) rise to the highest ranks within the Catholic Church, they could exercise a certain amount of power and creativity as the leaders of their religious communities. This session highlights some of the contributions of these nuns and in particular looks at the role that ritual played in ‘consecrating’ them to the powerful men they were already beholden to, be they the bishop or the doge.
